I made these changes and nothing would start. Put it all back as it was and Mysql and Zenoss started again.

You'll want to double check that you made the changes correctly. I've been running with these changes for over a year without any issues (since 2.3.3 and I'm now running 2.5.2 across 14 different servers).

Are the following values in MB? Is so, is that a bit large for a 4 or 8GB server?

cachesize 8000
pcachesize 2250

"zenhub genconf" shows the following definitions:

# in memory cachesize default: 1000, default:

# persistent cache file name default:None

#
# persistent cache file size in MB, default: 10
#pcachesize 10

Pretty sure that the cache size is in KB. In any case, I've used those values across many different Zenoss servers with as little as 2GB of RAM and as much as 5GB of RAM, they work fine.

Another great option is to store the Zenoss RRD files in a RAM disk or swapfs filesystem. You'll need to modify the scripts to rsync the RRD files to stable storage every hour or so and at startup and shutdown, but it pretty much eliminates performance issues due to disk IO.
