I'm a big fan of this zenpack primarily because it allows me to be notified and ack events so quickly. One thing I would recommend: If you use this zenpack to be notified, modify the alert message to contain the following:

id: %(evid)s

That way you can do a quick copy and paste when ack'ing via instant message.

Chudler - would it be easy for you to edit this so we can list multiple default chatroom servers? We find that the bot locks up every so often, so have to schedule a regular bounce of the process. It logs out and back into it's default chatroom, but then we have to re-invite it to the other chatrooms which is a bit of a pain ...

Brilliant plugin, though!

Yup, I tested a feature like that a while back. I have to do some more testing again, and include some other fixes, which I hope will solve the problem where you have to restart it sometimes. Should be ready towards the end of this month.

Hello Chudler,

Thanks again for the awesome little block of code. It worked well for us in v.2.x but we recently upgraded to v.3.x & this will not install. I'm sure everyone is bugging you about it, so sorry to pile on, but we were wondering when you might have a few minutes to upgrade this little guy so it works with v.3.x.

By the way, here is something interesting, if you had this installed on v.2.x & upgraded it to v.3.x it will work. But if you do a fresh install of v.3.x & then try to install this, it will not install. Dont know what that means. I'll also say that our v.2.x instance was pretty b0rked aftter upgrading to v.3.x, so dont do it unless you can roll-back easily.

I have a new entirely unrelated issue that I am hoping someone knows how I map a JID with a Zenoss user. I see the debug log complaining that I have not mapped the two together yet, which is true, I have not. I dont see where to do this. I wonder if I need two mappings, one for one direction, and then one for the other direction. Any & all tips will not only be awesome for me, but everyone else on this very busy page will read it too.

I hate to be a bother, but I still can not find out how to configure the:

"zenuser jabberid" mapping

issue.

I have tried it from the console, from the jabber window, from debug, from the config file, and I know I am doing in wrong, but just can not getit right. I feel silly not being able to figure this out. Can someone talk to me like a 4 year old just just 1 minute & give me the steps how to map my username (ie: lastname ... since that is what our Directory uses) and my jabberid (ie: since we use our firstname for this).

I hope this helps. Take a look at item #4 in the docs above under "Configuration Details":

first_user: Because incoming jabber messages will come from unknown persons, the bot needs a way to map the messages to Zenoss users. This is done with a Zope property "JabberId" on the user object. The mappings are managed with the bot command "mapuser". Since the bot will start without any mappings, we need at least one user to Bootstrap the others. That is what this option does. Specify the first user mapping like this: zenusername,jabberuser@example.com.

You specify this in $ZENHOME/etc/xmppBot.conf, for example

first_user chudler,chudler@im.uchicago.edu

If this doesn't work, you might have found a bug, failed install, or strange problem. Try this instead (are you familiar with the Admin Zope interface?):

http://$YOUR_ZEN_SERVER/zport/dmd/ZenUsers/$username/manage

Adjust that url for your installation, or just tack on "/manage" to the end of the url while viewing the ZenUser preferences page; you will need "manager" role for that. This takes you to the Zope interface (ZMI), now click "Properties", and see if your account has "JabberId", in addition to the usual title, email, etc. PLEASE NOTE: You can totally hose your Zenoss system by changing the wrong thing in Zope. Be careful in there.

As a reference for myself and others whom may be pulling their hair out setting this zenpack up for a chatbot on their google app site.

Here's my environment:

Zenoss 3.0.3 using ZenPacks.chudler.xmppBot-1.1-py2.6.egg.zip

Required xmppBot.conf fields:

im_host callfire.com

first_user james,james@callfire.com

jabber_user your_noc_user

jabber_pass some_password

jabber_host talk.google.com

jabber_port 5223

ssl true

The required fields above specify that we use google's jabber server. Our google app domain is specified using im_host. The jabber user and password is for our user on the google app site. The port and ssl is the work around for a bug with twisted 8.1 which comes with zenoss 3.0.3.

So basically my above example maps my zenoss user 'james' to my google app user 'james@callfire.com'. You'll have to restart zenoss itself since restarting the xmppBot daemon does NOT work.

Just a note for anyone trying to get the xmpp bot alert action working with groupchat. Having the alert action tied to a user group won't work since the rule looks for an authorized user before it broadcasts. Put the xmmp action rule in an authorized user's alerting rules and put the chat rooms address in the optional address field per the authors instructions: ex.

someroom@conference.example.com/groupchat

Hi,

We use this zenpack for all our alerting. It's great, so thanks for coding it. We have just made some changes to our SLA's and was wandering how to change the timings used. Currently the bot sends events every minute. I would like to change this to every 30 seconds. Is it possible?

I have installed the xmppBot version 2.0 on a Zenoss 4.2 and getting some errors like this
