Hi there,

I added your zenpack into my Zenoss monitoring, but when I bind the template to my windows server, the Perf graph came out an error

"User-supplied Python expression (here.getRRDValue('MemoryTotal') * 0.9) for maximum value caused error: ['Memory_MemoryUsed']"

Can anyone help me out? I still can't see my CPU, Memory usage....

That error is perfectly normal. It takes Zenoss 15 minutes before any graph data is displayed. The threshold relies on graph data being present so you'll see that error until it starts graphing, you just need to be patient. Also, make sure that you implement the transform in /Events/Perf/Memory as detailed above, otherwise your threshold alerts won't come in with a percentage as the value.

If the graphs don't generate after 15 to 20 minutes then please make sure that you have bc and snmpwalk installed on your server as the scripts that collect the data rely on them. bc is fairly standard but snmpwalk generally needs to be installed.

dev.getRRDValue('nsResMemAllocate') and dev.getRRDValue('nsResMemLeft') aren't even datasources in the pack. Are you trying to install the ZenPack as root by any chance?

Ok, first off, you should never run zenoss commands as root, you should run them as the zenoss user. There are lots of environment variables specific to the zenoss user which are required in most cases for proper execution of the commands.

Second, you don't need to type the full path to the command when you are the zenoss user. You simply need to type "zenpack --install ZenPacks.Nova.Windows.SNMPPerfMonitorSimple-1.6-py2.4.egg". The same goes for any other zenoss commands.

The error itself seems to relate to non-latin characters in a transform that you've set somewhere. There appears to be 3 non-latin characters at the start of a line in the transform which is causing Zenoss to choke. If you've added any transforms lately by copying and pasting them in, it's possible that you copied and pasted invalid characters along with it. If transform text turns red when you save it that indicates a syntax error and means that the transform will not work.

Your issue is not caused by a problem with my ZenPack. Verify any transforms that you added. Also, I would suggest that you read the Zenoss admin guide top to bottom so that you have a proper understanding of Zenoss.

Nope, no other differences. I just created it for people who don't care about individual cpu/core usage so that they don't have to move each device to a specific class based on the number of cpu/cores.

Cool! So to move from the Advanced to the Basic version, is it just a matter of moving the devices to a temp holding device path, uninstall the Advanced Zenpack, install the Basic ZenPack and then move the devices back?

Both packs can be installed simultaneously. The simple version installs a template called SNMPDevice in to /Server/Windows. Just make sure that template is bound to that class then move all of your devices to /Server/Windows. You can then safely remove the advanced pack if you wish (or leave it installed).

In Zenoss 3.0 it's in the bottom left menu (right in the very bottom left hand corner of the browser). Navigate to the class then select the Transform option from that menu. Everyone seems to completely ignore that menu lol.

I already explained how to access it, you don't need a screenshot. Navigate to Events -> Perf -> Memory, then click on the button in the absolute bottom left hand corner (it's the only one there) and select Transform.

Windows 2000 doesn't expose memory usage via SNMP. If you edit the template and remove the memory datasource/threshold/graph then you'll be able to see the CPU graph.

This zenpack as many other seem to be broken by Zenoss 3.2. Nothing but the first datasource value get graphed. Well, I assume though.

Someone using apache monitor already openned a trac so we hope this will be fixed.

Next time I will wait longer before upgrading...

Yes, the issue is far from being specific to this pack. Actually it probably affects the majority of monitoring templates. There is an issue with command datasources as well as with any SNMP datasources that have a period before the OID (i.e .1.2.3.4.5.6).

No, that means that it isn't able to dynamically calculate the threshold because it has no memory data to work with. If you're trying to monitor a server running Windows Server 2000 it won't work since Win2000 does not present memory info via SNMP. The memory monitoring portion of this pack only works with Windows Server 2003 and 2008. No one should even be using 2000 these days anyways, it's insecure and unsupported.

I am glad I read all of these message. I am on virtual appliance 3.2.1 after installing it only last week. As I understand the simple and advanced zenpack is broken with 3.2.1..correct? or said another way 3.2.1 is broken with theis zenpack...lol

No, it's not broken in 3.2.1. There were bugs in 3.2 that caused the template issues. This pack works perfectly fine in 3.2.1. Just make sure that you have the snmpwalk and bc commandline commands on the server. The script that gathers/parses the data relies on those commands to do so.

If you're using the Enterprise Collectors ZenPack or Egor's Distributed Collectors ZenPack they will take care of that automatically. If you setup your collectors by hand you just need to copy the ZenPack directory from $ZENHOME/ZenPack on the master to $ZENHOME/ZenPack on the collector.

I might have fixed my own problem. I installed this zenpack via the command line but just looked under zenpacks in the GUI and it did not show the author or version of the zenpack and all said there was an error and I should restart zope. I restarted Zenoss and now I can run test via the data source correctly. I am betting this might now work. I will give the graphs some time to graph.

Yeh, you should always restart zope/zenoss after installing any ZenPack. Also, the reason why you couldn't run the script from the commandline is because you were trying to execute it via the "sh" command. The script is a bash script, not as sh script (no one really uses sh anymore these days, it's outdated). The proper way to execute it would be to have done either...

bash wincpu.sh 10.50.92.56 public

or just...

./wincpu.sh 10.50.92.56 public

provided it's marked as executable (chmod +x), which it should be by default in the pack.

Zenoss 3.2.1

CentOS 5.8

I have the ZenPacks.Nova.Windows.SNMPPerfMonitorSimple-1.6-py2.6.egg installed and have followed your instructions above and verified everything as best I can, yet my CPU and Memory graphs continue to show 'nan' values.

If I manually test the data sources from within the "Edit Data Source" dialog, they are successful yet my graphs continue to show 'nan'.

I am able to snmpwalk the target host successfully.

I have allowed multiple days to go by with no graphs.

Any advice you have is greatly appreciated.

Sorry for the late response. Since you're using the older version of the pack for Zenoss 3.x make sure that you have the snmpwalk and bc commands available on your system.

Can you go in to the template and run a test of the datasources to see what the output looks like? If you have no data then the script is failing for some reason.

Another thing I notice is that the script that the zenpack is using shows snmp -v1 and I have zenoss configured to use v2c

Should I modify the wincpu.sh and winmem.sh scripts to use snmp -v2c located here:

/opt/zenoss/ZenPacks/ZenPacks.Nova.Windows.SNMPPerfMonitorSimple-1.6-py2.6.egg/ZenPacks/Nova/Windows/SNMPPerfMonitorSimple/libexec/

-v1 should not make a difference, the windows SNMP agent responds on both v1 and v2. I really don't know what else to check. If the script is returning data then you have something funky going on with zencommand. You could try deleting the RRD files and having them re-generate. They might be bad.

Hi Ryan,

I am trying to install your zenpack (simple) to Zenoss core 4.2.3 (centos 6.3) but I am probably missing something.

As zenoss user zenpack --install ZenPacks.Nova.Windows.SNMPPerfMonitorSimple-1.7-py2.7.egg without errors,adding Transform to Events/perf/memory, reboot,

I can see Zenpack installed at Advanced/Zenpacks and at menu Advanced/Monitoring Templates/SNMPDevice is 5 visible data souces bind at /Server/Windows.

But these data sources are missing in Infrastructure view under Monitoring templates/device /Server/Windows.There are only default data sources.Advanced version works well for me, but I want to monitor only total CPU usage.

Could you plase point me what I am doing wrong ?

Did you read this ZenPack page? It states:

The ZenPack provides a template SNMPDevice, available under /Server/Windows.

You need to bind the SNMPDevice template to /Server/Windows to make use of it.

Also, make sure you restart zope after installing the pack: zopectl restart

I am using Zenoss 3.2 and getting below error on few of my windows devices. Many other window devices showing CPU and Memory graphs successfully.

The server reported the following error:

That error just means that not enough memory data has been gathered yet for Zenoss to be able to dynamically calculate the threshold. It's normal to see that when first binding the template to a device but it should disappear after a few polling cycles. If it is persisting then you have a legitimate data collection issue which you need to troubleshoot.

Try testing the memory datasource against the device from the template to see what it does (or try running the memory script against the device by hand from the commandline). You can also look inside the scripts and see what they are doing. For some reason your devices aren't responding the way they should be.

Yeah i have query device by using memory datasource and that device not able to respond. In the end, I have restared said windows device and after restart, device able to query from memory data source and also poll the performance based graph.

There are few servers which i have facing same problem but the problem is that i can't able to restart them i-e Domain Controller windows based servers.

Have you tried just restarting the SNMP service on them instead of rebooting the whole server? That's the first thing that I would have tried.

I need to ask one more thing that i need to configured different threshold CPU and memory alerts on different windows based servers.

Now, if i modified threshold value on one machine by "here.getRRDValue('MemoryTotal') * 0.8" then threshold value on all windows based servers is also changed

You need to use the Override Template option to create a local copy of the template on each device and then modify the local copy, otherwise yes, it would affect all devices if you edit the global copy.

On Zenoss 3.2.1, are there any issues with installing this "simple" (v2.6) zenspack if the older "advanced" (v1.6) zenpack is already installed and in use? I have an old version of the "advanced" (1.6) installed currently. I want to start migrating servers to the "simple" version.

If this is possible, is there anything I need to be carefull about?

Does any body knows, how to set the threshold for sysUpTime ?

I am trying o set a threshold so that zenoss can alert me, if sysUpTime is less that 5 minutes.

sysUptime is: "The time (in hundredths of a second) since the network management portion of the system was last re-initialized."

Meaning you just need to figure out what 5 minutes would be in hundredths of a second and set the threshold to that value.

Just be aware that monitoring for a coldStart snmp trap from the device (if the device is properly setup to send traps to the Zenoss server) essentially accomplishes the same thing, and does it more instantaneously.

Zenoss already collects uptime information for any type of OS (including windows) via SNMP and displays it in the UI. If you want to monitor for when reboots happens, make sure you configure your windows servers to send SNMP traps to the Zenoss server. They will send a coldStart trap if they reboot. You can use an event mapping/transform to change the summary/message of the event to "Device Reboot" or whatever you wish. Please read the Zenoss Admin Guide for information on event mappings/tuning.
