Thanks Jane for updating this! I've been waiting a while for it. I seem to be running into an install issue though:

You need to unzip the file first so you get a file that ends in .egg. Then use your zenpack --install <filename-ending-in-.egg>.

Glad to see someone else ran into the 'forgot to unzip' issue besides me. I made a fix for it and hope to see it roled into future product.

Bah!

Having spent ages fixing Kells's MIB_Browser ZenPack to work with Zenoss 3.x - it's broken again with 3.2!!!!

Don't know why yet.

Sorry to hear this. Especially since I was told by our own people that there would be no/little problems with ZenPacks within the 3.x series. Let me know if you hit a brick wall and I will ping Kells on a specific issue if you post it. Maybe related to the many page UIs that were rewritten?? Shot in the dark.

I dont think its devs fault tho, its kinda inevitable when we have the core-enterprise setup that we have. ZenPacks will continue to break on version upgrades, as long as we have a core that is partially being driven by enterprise needs. Hopefully we can attempt to improve ZenPack compatibility amongst smaller versions and leave the big changes to large versions.

I am sorry - that is largely my fault. Other volunteers in the Zenoss Community Alliance have been trying to set up a not-for-profit organisation as an umbrella to fund joint development efforts and this has proved harder and more time-consuming than anticipated. However, I am the one trying to pull together the development work and I am very conscious that we started these ideas back in the summer and it is now nearly Christmas.

The good news is that I finally mangaed to get some time last week to return to the UserRoles development work; the bad news is that the the NPO and a bank account behind it, are still not in place and also that my time is constrained again over the next couple of weeks.

I guess all I can say is "mea culpa" but it is still anticipated, not defunct. If you are still interested, all I can ask is that you hang in there.

Thanks for the update. We're currently evaluating Zabbix and loving what we see. Looks like we'll be ditching Zenoss.

Zenoss is a mess in my opinion. The documentation is severly lacking. The book on packt was horrible. So many broken zenpacks and scripts that don't work. Out of the box it doesn't even monitor our cisco gear very well. We've had to spend countless hours just loading OID's to monitor/graph even basic properties of ubiquitous hardware.

Everytime I try to do something I run into a flood of errors. I've worked with it from 2.6 or so up to 3.2 and tried installing from source, rpm, the vm appliance. They all seem to come out differently with different errors and bugs. I guess if you know phython and have a desire to learn the zope framework and twisted and all the custom zenoss stuff it might be different. But the time we spent messing around with it we could have bought an enterprise solution. Now looking at the zenoss company website I can't tell what the heck direction this thing is headed. It's time to jump ship.

Anyone reading this and feeling the same I highly suggest you check out zabbix.

I believe I have a way to make this ZenPack work with 3.2.x. Basically you revert 4 Core files back to the 3.1 level of code. Zenoss development kindly provided a patch to do this but I have found that their 3.2.1 patch didn't work on my system - I think it was built from a slightly later build. I will provide their patches and also document here what actually needs to change in case the patches don't work for you either.

oldmib.patch worked for me on a 3.2.0 system.

oldmib_3.2.1.patch did NOT work for me on a 3.2.1 system (neither did the oldmib.patch)

If you want to try the patches, copy them to $ZENHOME and change directory there. Run:

patch -p 0 < oldmib.patch

to apply a patch. To undo it and restore to original, use:

patch -R -p 0 < oldmib.patch

You will need to completely restart Zenoss and make sure your browser cache is cleared out.

If you need to make manual changes, this is what you need (all directories under $ZENHOME):

I am going to petition Zenoss to restore this code to the 3.1 level as I do not believe that the 3.2 code adds any benefit and it breaks this ZenPack. My understanding is that Zenoss Core 4.?? is NOT planning to incorporate mib browsing as part of the base product.
