Forgot to mention in the writeup that the titles for the events in the RSS feed link back to the corresponding device page in zenoss.

There is a little typo in de clear command text:

$$ZENHOME/scripts/strickthroughRSS.sh '/my/path/to/rss/feed.xml' '${evt/device}' '${evt/summary}' '${evt/severity}' '${evt/firstTime}'

The file is called strikethrough (without the letter c and with e)

Besides that I get the following error on on the clear script in de zenaction event log:

2010-08-16 20:49:32,498 ERROR zen.ZenActions: Command Add2RSS says /usr/local/zenoss/scripts/strickthroughRSS.sh: 45: declare: not found
/usr/local/zenoss/scripts/strickthroughRSS.sh: 46: declare: not found
/usr/local/zenoss/scripts/strickthroughRSS.sh: 48: Syntax error: "(" unexpected

And the element structure of the feed.xml file is incorrect in my case:

I fixed the declare error by changing the first line in both scripts from:

#!/bin/sh

Into:

#!/bin/bash

Ok thanks I fixed the spelling error in the write-up and may I ask what os you are running these scripts on. I am using CentOS 5.5 and I believe my scripts look like /bin/sh but I may be wrong will check when I get back to work then I will update the attached scripts.

I'm using Ubuntu. I believe the header of the feed.xml is also missing from the script. Is this correct?

That would also explain why the item element is not created in the right place correctly because the insertLoc variable has the wrong value.

Note: you must first create an xml that is identical to the one of the writeup ie.

<?xml version="1.0" ?>
<rss version="2.0">
<channel>

    <title>Zenoss Events</title>
    <description>Current Events from Zenoss</description>
    <link>http://zenoss-server:8080</link>

</channel>
</rss>

With of course changing zenoss-server to the hostname of your server.

You must also change zenossAddr in add2RSS to match yout servers hostname.

Thanks for the explanation, I didn't realize that I had to create the file before the script could be used. Now it all makes sense .

Doesn't the feed.xml file just grow too large in size if jsut left alone? I'd think it'd be better to have a limit to how many events it holds at any given time..

No it should not grow to large because it will remove events that are older than 24 hours.
