Thank you for this information! I have had permission problems from day one. This applies to 3.x versions as well, correct?

Also, the install admin guide isn't real clear, but to confirm, you install zenoss as root (ubuntu), and start it as root? Here's the verbage, doesn't say. I thought when you stop or start zenoss, you MUST start or stop as zenoss user, and when you add zenpacks, must be zenoss? There seems to be some confusion, at least to me, on when you must use zenoss user and must not.

4.1.2. Using apt (Command Line)
1. Add the Zenoss repository to the /etc/apt/sources.list file. Add the following line at the bottom of the file:
# Zenoss repository
deb http://dev.zenoss.org/deb main stable
2. Enter the following commands:
apt-get update
apt-cache search zenoss-stack
This should return:
zenoss-stack - Zenoss Stack with all requirements.
3. Enter this command to install the Zenoss stack:
apt-get install zenoss-stack
Zenoss is installed in the /usr/local/zenoss directory.

4. Start Zenoss with this command:
# /etc/init.d/zenoss-stack start

Yes, this is for 3.0 too.

You install as root. You CAN start/stop/restart it as root with the startup script: "/etc/init.d/zenoss-stack start/stop/restart" which will start/stop/restart mysql and zenoss.

You can start and stop zenoss as the zenoss user with "zenoss start" or "zenoss stop" (won't affect mysql).

Anything else done from the commandline to do with zenoss should be done as the zenoss user (including installing ZenPacks).

You can restart just mysql as root by doing "/etc/init.d/zenoss-stack mysql restart".

One more question. When you install zenpacks from the gui, you must login as zenoss user, not admin user? Also, when stopping or starting daemons from the gui, you must also be zenoss, not admin?

No, the zenoss user is a system account that all of the zenoss processes run as. As far as the GUI goes, you need to be logged in with an account that has administrator privileges (Manager role in Zenoss).
