Status tab - how to fill information in?

Hi everyone.

I just started using Zenoss.  So far i've had some luck in getting things to monitor but I feel it is still not working like it should.  I followed all the install instructions and have read any documentation I could find but some things just aren't filling in.

I have SNMP Services running on the PC, I have Informant installed.  With those things done I still dont see things such as "OS Make, OS Version, Contact, Location" etc on the status tab.  What do I need to do to get those to fill in?  Are they regkeys on the PC i'm monitoring that are just not filled in?

Also, What other programs do i need to run on the monitored PC's other than informant that will help zenoss give me the most information.

I dont know very much about WMI and the documents i've read about it were to vague to help me get started.  Is that something I'll need to figure out in order to best utalize Zenoss?  I have not started to figure out what a zenpack is either, so if those are the answer to what i'm seeking, i haven't tried to mess with addons yet becasue i'd rather get the core working 100% then add addons 1 at a time.

does anyone know of any good "setup" guides on how to be able to 100% monitor Windows XP machines and get maximum data returned to zenoss?

I know i'm asking a pretty vague question that kinda sounds like "how do I use zenoss" but I am using it and its working good, I just cant seem to get some of those fields to populate with information.

Anything anyone can do to point me to a good guide or help me, would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,

First off, welcome to the Zenoss Community

I'm pretty sure the OS Make, OS Version, Contact and Location are provided by SNMP, not sure where they're set in the OS though.

One of our community members Jim Tambling, just added a new document to the Wiki that should prove useful: Enabling WMI monitoring in Windows XP for non-domain machines

ZenPacks are extensions to the Zenoss application, usually for adding additional monitoring templates, but sometimes they may provide new features as well.  We've got a Getting Started Webinar tomorrow (and every 2 weeks if you miss it) that should help get you a feel for what's going on: Getting Started with Zenoss Core Webinar October 27  Also, if you haven't done so already I highly recommend reading the  Getting Started Guide (pdf).

    Thanks,

Your question is indeed quite vague. With something like Zenoss, there

really isn't any meaning to maximum data. You need to know (and tell us

if you want help) what you want to monitor. What do you want to know

about the systems you are monitoring?

For your modeling issue, that is the lack of OS information, you might

want to look at the logs. On my test XP computer, I get:

    OS

    Tag #

    Serial #

    HW Make

    Microsoft

    HW Model

    .1.3.6.1.4.1.311.1.1.3.1.1

    OS Make

    Microsoft

    OS Version

    Windows 2000 Version 5.1

    Rack Slot

    0

    Name

    PC140

    Contact

    Location

As you can see, this is basically from SNMP configuration, so I haven't

entered TAG, SERIAL, Contact or location, so most of it is generic. I'd

look at your SNMP config on Windows to see if it's limiting what the

Zenoss server IP can pull, and to see if everything you want reported is

    available.

If it sets the model as an SNMP OID (a bunch of numbers with periods between them), then it's because it's not finding a matching model in the Products section.  Click on Products in the left hand menu and you'll see what I mean.  You may need to add products to the list by hand time to time.  You would select an appropriate section (such as Microsoft, or whatever), then add an entry, and specify the OID that it pulled down when you modeled the device.  You will also want to navigate to /Products/Unknown and remove the OID from that section afterwards as it gets added there automatically and will screw things up (since Zenoss might look at that entry before it sees the one that you added).
