Problem with ibdata1 is growing up how can shrink??

My events database was growing a lot although I already had used the cleanupscripts of zenoss. Here is how to clean more.
another thing could also be to set a max size on the my.cnf , usually in /usr/local/zenoss/mysql
i.e
innodb_data_file_path = ibdata1:10M:autoextend:max:512M
or if you more generous.
innodb_data_file_path=ibdata1:10M:autoextend:max:15G
as i understand it with this, the database will never grow bigger than your max setting and old data will be lost whe max size is reached.
plz correct me if im wrong, im no mysql guru.
BTW:
Zope also has a database. should be packed now and then.
