Scalability of Zenoss community version

Hi all:

Is there any one use the zennos open source version to manage a network with over 1000 nodes?

We need to manage 1000 nodes in our data center and have to monitor the performance data of each hosts.

Is that possible for open source zenoss to manage node up to 1000 nodes?

Thanks a lot,

Houcheng Lin

There are many Zenoss Core installations over 1000 nodes, take a look at this recent thread: New 36G, 16CPU server

take it with a grain of salt, things you need to consider are:

    1. how much do you want to monitor on these 1000 nodes? the system gets progressively worse as you add more and more data sources
    2. how important is support? community is great but 80% of the times you can not expect any help at all
    3. how much time do you have to play around with the system? zenoss is a great platform but to get any real use out of it; you will need to spend a fair bit of time getting used to their way of doing things and then modifying or adding datasources

How well can the VMware appliance scale??  Can it easily monitor, say, 60 SOHO routers (just ping them), several HP switches, and perhaps a few Cisco items?? This is all I want to use it for...does it have enough disk space, does it do its own database grooming?? Thank you, Tom

if you are just doing ping checks there wont be enough events stored in the DB for it ever come up. VM image is fine for that, pinging away at devices doesnt take much juice. i think this is what they mean about monitoring 1000+ nodes.

The VMware appliance is set to 2gigs of RAM and 5 gigs of HD space I believe, so that may fill up in a large environment.  You're probably just fine monitoring 60 devices with the VM.  You can obviously tweak this to give yourself more space, but the VM is pretty stripped down if you find yourself needing to make modifications to your Zenoss installation.  Lots of users go ahead and install Zenoss on a full-fledged OS (like Ubuntu, CentOS or whatever) and run that on a VM.  Of course, the caveat with running your monitoring solution virtualized is that if your VMware goes down, your monitoring won't be able to respond.

    Thanks,

    Matt

Is there anything anywhere which tells how the Linux VM should be set up, partitioned, etc. so that upon installing Zenoss, there is enough space for whatever zenoss needs and for its database??  There's lots of partitioning recommendations for Linux, but I know that zenoss uses mysql...I have looked at the Packt book but it says nothing about how the Linux should be partitioned or set up etc. so zenoss has what it needs etc.  Thank you, Tom

you should be able to just run the VM image as is.

Re: Scalability of Zenoss community version
Sorry, that is not my question -- I meant when I set up a NEW/clean Linux VM like Matt suggested, to run Zenoss in. This makes updating and other things easier.  So, to re-ask again: How should I set up / partition a NEW Linux VM (probably Ubuntu, maybe CentOS) for an effective installation of Zenoss using the Linux stack installer?? (I do plan to change Zope to port 80.)  Thank you, Tom
