Google maps alternative for tunnels or caverns

Hi Zenoss admins,
In two NMS we have to build, we have strange geographical situations :
The customers wants to have some sort of geographical mappings like the Google map provides, but it will obvisouly not work within a cavern or tunnel. Beside, the security restrictions forbids connecting these NMS to Google.
I have though about defining locations in other ways, like 3D GPS coordinates, mapped on top of a location map, but I'm not sure it is really doable with Zenoss.
Ideas and pointers welcome,
Charles
Well, there was some network weathermap setup that would then query Zenoss (not really integration though you maybe could use the site portlet to put it on the dashboard) that may be an idea. But it would basically require you to do a lot of work. There was also I think some stuff with OpenMaps IIRC, I don't know if that would help.
Anyway, I think you'd basically have to implement the mapping application and integrate it into Zenoss, so I'm not aware of any plug-and-play thing.

If you cannot use Google Maps since you're not connected to the Internet, the current implementation of mapping won't work. If you have an interest in working on an alternative implementation that supports offline scenarios, I'd suggest using OpenLayers (http://openlayers.org/).
There is already an OpenLayers Map Portlet, which could replace the Google Map on the dashboard.
There is a Javascript abstraction layer that could be used to test switching back and forth between Google Maps and OpenLayers: Mapstraction http://mapstraction.com/
If you're interested in working on this, I know there are other users who have expressed interest in replacing Google Maps for various reasons.
Good luck,

Did you end up figuring this one out, im in the same boat at the moment and looking for a solution if its possible.
Hi,
I estimated the time to implement a custom solution using http://www.network-weathermap.com, but the customer hasn't decided yet if he wants it or not (budget issue).
Here was my plan :
- use http://www.network-weathermap.com
- install and configure PHP part and Apache security
- extract infos out of Zenoss :
- location
- coordinates
- status
- other informations
- generate config file
- generate weathermap. Element color = fn(status), URLs = fn(zenoss info)
- display map in new web browser window (HTML meta refresh)
- we will need a map of the installation
- position each device on map, encode in Zenoss
assumptions:
- no inter-device links display on map
- no event display on map
Regards,
Charles
