Can't change IP address on device - Very frustrated

I'm having a small but frustrating issue. I need to change the IP addresses on several of my devices and Zenoss will not let me because those IPs were used before. Unfortuneatly we played a bit of a game of musical IPs last night and Zenoss is not happy about it. Here is the deal:
Here are the actual network (not zenoss) changes we made:
When i sat down at Zenoss the first thing i did was place the old Router 1 device into the "Decommissioned" production state. I still wanted to keep its perf data and events but i didn't want to actively monitor it anymore.
I then went into my layer 3 switch device and tried to change the IP address to 10.0.0.1. Zenoss wouldn't let me. Thinking that perhaps Zenoss could only have a "one device to one ip address" ratio i went into the decommissioned router and changed its IP address to 0.0.0.0. (I also tried several other arbitrary unused ips) Zenoss still would not let me give my layer 3 switch the 10.0.0.1 address. After some forum browsing i found that apparently the ONLY way to get that ip address back for use is to entirely delete the old device that used the IP address i want to use now. So, with a bit of reluctance that's what i did. As soon as i did that i was able to give the layer 3 switch the old router's ip. All is well with the layer 3 switch now
Lastly, I tried to add my firewall to Zenoss using the layer 3 switche's OLD ip. But no. It won't let me. It says its still in freaking use.
Seriously? I can't be the only person who thinks this is absurd. I want to keep all the perf and event data for the layer 3 switch. I don't want to have to delete it entirely and recreate it just so that i can add my new firewall device into zenoss using its OLD ip address.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Anyone?
Did you model the devices after you changed the IP addresses?

What is the exact error message you get?
Try doing 'Rename Device' on the device that originally had the IP Address that you want to reuse.
MattRK:
You'll want to delete Router1 and uncheck the boxes for deleting associated events and perf data. To do this navigate to the device status page of Router1, pick the gear icon in the lower left, then Delete. Uncheck both boxes and press OK. This will remove the object from zenoss without eliminating all the data. It should also clear up the ip reservation problem. Let me know if this works for you.
Best,
--Shane
