Mysql performance tweaks

Good Afternoon.
I am running zenoss core on a 2x 2Ghz Dual core intel with 8GB of ram. The history table is realitivly big (4gb with a 1.5gb index)
I want to keep about 6 months worth of history. Is there some performance modifications that I can do to the my.cnf or move the data base to another server so that my queries against the history table will be faster?
Regards,
I can't recall much documented about this outside of message/50843#50843
Thanks for the link. That seems to help with the performance issue. The queries against that history table are still taking longer than I hoped. Might need to look into another solution.
