Distributed Monitoring

Hi
I'm trying to get distributed collectors to work on Core 4.2...
I have downloaded the newest version from Github, and it seems to install fine..
I'm quite new to zenoss, where do I go from here to add a new collector...
If I go to the Advanced -> Collectors, I only get the possibility to add either a Monitor or a Remote Monitor, is this the same???
If I try to add either of the two I get prompted for an ID, and nothing else... Where do I get this ID from...
Thanks
Martin
The ID this is asking for is the host name for the collector you want to connect too. This is another PC with Zenoss runing on it (with modification).
Thanks
Rich
So, if I create a second node, install the same ZenPack.. then I should just be able to enter the hostname on the primary node, and everything should be fine??
I found this:
http://blog.edgoad.com/2009/04/this-post-discusses-how-to-configure.html
This is probably for v. 3...
Is there something similiar for v. 4??
The process has not changed from 3.x to 4.x, however the link you reference appears to be ol (Prior to the distributed collector ZenPack) The directions on the top of docs/DOC-5861 should basically cover you.
Ok..
Is it in anyway possible to create a setup where all communication is initiated from the remote collector...
The example is that the collector is placed behind a firewall in a remote location, and the "master" server is available on a public address??
Also, is it possible to request a auto-discover on the remote collector from the master server??
1. use VPN, communications between "master" and "remote collectors" is not encrypted.
2. modeling and discovery process - yes. auto-discover - don't know, simply try it.
Ok..
It almost works...
I can add single machines from the webinterface, and by using the zendisc command on the monitor, I can do an auto discovery...
The machines are add to the database and are manageable in the web gui on the master...
One thing remains, no data seems to be collected from the machines connected to the slave...
In the logs on the slave I get:
2012-09-04 15:46:08,835 INFO zen.zensyslog: Counter eventCount, value 12
2012-09-04 15:46:08,836 INFO zen.zensyslog: 2 devices processed (0 datapoints)
2012-09-04 15:46:08,837 INFO zen.collector.scheduler: Tasks: 4 Successful_Runs: 4 Failed_Runs: 0 Missed_Runs: 0 Queued_Tasks: 0 Running_Tasks: 0
this is from zensyslog.log, but it's generally the same message in every log...
What I'm thinking here is that's strange that it says "0 datapoints"...
Seems like the infomation from the master to the slave about which groups the machines are supposed to be in, are lost somewhere...
Any good ideas???
If you click on the device in question, on the right side, which is the value of its collector? Is it assigned to the master or the collector?
Are any monitoring emplates bound to the device?
It's connected to the collector...
