Maximum Ping Failures collector setting

There is a Collector parameter called "Maximum Ping Failures".  The Michael Badger book documents this as "If a device fails to respond to a ping for the specified number of consecutive tries, remove it".  The default is 1440 minutes (24 hours).

For starters, 24 hours doesn't seem a long enough default for a device to be down before it is deleted from thye CMDB (which I assume is what the description means).  I have devices that have been down for lots longer with ping failure event counts of way over 1440 and the device hasn't been removed.

Does anyone know:

a) Is this parameter actually used at all these days?

b) If so, what does it actually do?

Thanks,

Jane
