The topic for #zenoss-testing is: Zenoss 3.0 Alpha #1 - QA Test Day April 22: http://bit.ly/9xmYxX (6:46:07 AM)
mrayzenoss has changed the topic to: Today is Zenoss 3.0 Alpha #1 QA Test Day (7:08:39 AM)
7:09:11 AM mrayzenoss: Good morning everyone, if you're checking out the alpha and you have any questions, please let us know
7:14:07 AM Jane_Curry: Hi!
7:14:23 AM Jane_Curry: Just uppin the memory on my alpha system....
7:25:29 AM Jane_Curry: In events.log I have messages saying
7:25:37 AM Jane_Curry: The compressed javascript file /usr/local/zenoss/zenoss/Products/ZenUI3/browser/resources/js/deploy/zenoss-compiled.js
7:25:38 AM Jane_Curry: does not exist. Zenoss will still run but UI performance is
7:25:40 AM Jane_Curry: HEAVILY DEGRADED. Please fix by running inst/buildjs.sh.
7:27:10 AM mrayzenoss: interesting… did you build from source or was this with the installer?
7:27:12 AM Jane_Curry: From the Devices main panel, I see events alongside individual devices...
7:27:24 AM Jane_Curry: and events at the top for all devices...
7:27:45 AM Jane_Curry: am I supposed to be able to click on these events symbols - cos it doesn't work for me
7:28:55 AM Jane_Curry: using the stack build for 32-bit Open SuSE - zenoss-stack-2.5.70-642-linux.bin
7:33:02 AM mrayzenoss: Jane_Curry: turns out that's a known issue, should be fixed in next alpha
7:37:03 AM Jane_Curry: From User's Preferences, if you use Test button to test email..
7:37:53 AM Jane_Curry: the email is sent but you get an error -

7:38:51 AM Jane_Curry: sorry Matt - which is the known issue - the events.log message or not being able to click on events?
7:44:40 AM Jane_Curry: Noddy question..
7:44:51 AM Jane_Curry: how do I change the class of a device?
7:47:47 AM mrayzenoss: Jane_Curry: the events.log message
7:48:10 AM mrayzenoss: our QA manager will be here soon and he knows which issues are already known
7:48:22 AM mrayzenoss: me, I've got to go bother people and ask them

8:02:08 AM Jane_Curry: At this stage, only core
8:02:21 AM Jane_Curry: Next step was to try installing a ZenPack
8:02:48 AM Jane_Curry: Is ZenPack install likely to work?? I was thinking of MIB-Browser 1.08..
8:03:46 AM bbibeault: Morning everyone.
8:04:06 AM Jane_Curry: Hiya
8:10:30 AM bbibeault: Has anyone taken a look at the latest bits on http://public-demo.zenoss.com, or installed the alpha themselves yet?
8:12:49 AM Jane_Curry: Trying with the alpha - see earlier queries..
8:14:12 AM bbibeault: Sorry I don't have the backlog from this chat, can you re-post those, please?

8:29:52 AM Jane_Curry: Sorry - 4th question repeated - last paste in error...
8:30:11 AM Jane_Curry: Noddy question..
8:30:13 AM Jane_Curry: [15:44] <Jane_Curry> how do I change the class of a device?
8:30:33 AM bbibeault: To change the class of a device, just drag the device to the class that you want.
8:30:40 AM bbibeault: Same way to add to a system/group/location.
8:31:24 AM bbibeault: We haven't tried any community zenpack installs yet. I don't know if this is an issue with that particular zenpack, or installing zenpacks itself.
8:32:34 AM Jane_Curry: Re device class change - too easy!
8:32:39 AM bbibeault: Heheh, it is now.
8:33:52 AM bbibeault: @ the zenpack issue, I am tempted to say it is tied to that zenpack itself. We have switched to python 2.6 and zope 2.12, could that have affected it?
8:35:34 AM Jane_Curry: Tried installing MIB-Browser zenpack, a noddy ZenPack of mine and the http-monitor..
8:35:46 AM Jane_Curry: all fail in the same way
8:36:00 AM Jane_Curry: from GUI you get no message and nothing happens
8:36:06 AM Jane_Curry: from command line you get

8:36:23 AM Jane_Curry: ERROR: zenpack command failed. Reason: AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'clone'
8:37:45 AM bbibeault: The GUI will likely not output the zenpack installation process anymore (but command line will).
8:38:01 AM bbibeault: I would say open a ticket and we can try and prioritize/investigate.
8:38:19 AM Jane_Curry: 5th question..
8:38:27 AM Jane_Curry: soory - long repost..

8:47:07 AM mrayzenoss: Jane_Curry: thanks
8:47:22 AM bbibeault: Thanks Jane, moving to "infrastructure" for the component for the meantime.
8:49:00 AM Jane_Curry: Just tried another zenoss backup after these various attempts to install zenpacks..
8:50:37 AM Jane_Curry: now get a different message that does match http://dev.zenoss.com/trac/ticket/6520
8:50:59 AM bbibeault: Ok, so that first message was a new issue, then.
8:51:04 AM bbibeault: Can you get a ticket in for that, as well, please?
8:51:50 AM Jane_Curry: .. do get a backup file but ZODB and events database are missing
9:08:03 AM Jane_Curry: backup barf'ing on lack of $ZENHOME/ZenPacks directory - http://dev.zenoss.com/trac/ticket/6565
9:09:43 AM Jane_Curry: Any thoughts on my second question...
9:09:53 AM Jane_Curry: From the Devices main panel, I see events alongside individual devices...
9:09:55 AM Jane_Curry: [16:26] <Jane_Curry> [15:27] <Jane_Curry> and events at the top for all devices...
9:09:56 AM Jane_Curry: [16:26] <Jane_Curry> [15:27] <Jane_Curry> am I supposed to be able to click on these events symbols - cos it doesn't work for me
9:13:25 AM bbibeault: Sorry, Jane - which 2nd question again?
9:13:44 AM bbibeault: Oh I think I replied to that, Ian said that he thinks that is planned, but it's not in yet.
9:17:20 AM Jane_Curry: OK - gotcha..
9:17:30 AM Jane_Curry: New question...
9:17:46 AM Jane_Curry: How do I set the googlemap key for a location?
9:18:15 AM bbibeault: We don't have the ability to edit locations or other organizers yet, so we can't, for example, set the address.
9:18:25 AM bbibeault: That is a pending task that we have assigned.
9:18:35 AM Jane_Curry: OK - I'll stop trying...
9:19:13 AM bbibeault: Heheh, sorry, this alpha is definitely still an alpha, but much of the functionality is present and working.
9:19:16 AM bbibeault: All good feedback, btw.
9:20:08 AM SEJeff: Would it be possible to post a small walkthrough or round of screenshots on the zenoss blog?
9:20:22 AM SEJeff: Perhaps mrayzenoss could do a sneak peak post or something?
9:20:36 AM bbibeault: It definitely would be. I know that we are updating documentation, and may be able to launch that with next week's alpha update.
9:20:47 AM bbibeault: A new Getting Started guide I believe is in the works.
9:21:15 AM SEJeff: Oh I didn't mean that so much as, "Hey everyone, we rock at making beautiful user interfaces... here is what is coming down the pipe"
9:21:42 AM SEJeff: For us users, we'd like to take a look without setting up a dev instance. You don't offer 3.0 alpha enterprise yet
9:21:57 AM mrayzenoss: SEJeff: we usually just send people to http://public-demo.zenoss.com
9:22:02 AM bbibeault: Something to help explain the changes? Ahh, there is a machine, public-demo.zenoss.com, I think the login is admin/zenoss.
9:22:05 AM mrayzenoss: user/pass admin/zenoss
9:22:08 AM bbibeault: Feel free to play around in there.
9:22:10 AM bbibeault: What he said.
9:22:45 AM SEJeff: bbibeault, mrayzenoss Yeah that would do it. Thanks
9:28:11 AM Jane_Curry: You alpha demo (thanks for previous post) looks like it has working locations and lines drawn between locations
9:28:43 AM Jane_Curry: is this just a mock-up given previous comment about unable to edit locations?
9:28:51 AM bbibeault: That machine is also a development machine; locations can still have addresses, but in the most current UI we cannot edit them.
9:29:16 AM bbibeault: I would guess that when we had the old UI and when that machine was configured, it got the location fields edited, so it would still show the maps.
9:30:07 AM Jane_Curry: so - you are saying it only works cos of history - I cannot make it work with a fresh install?
9:30:25 AM bbibeault: Not that I know of, unfortunately. It's something still in development.
9:30:41 AM bbibeault: And we don't yet have upgrades from 2.5.2 to Stone Crab ironed out.
9:53:01 AM Jane_Curry: I have long used the little traceroute.py utility that Wouter wrote to check network topology
9:53:25 AM Jane_Curry: it barfs with
9:53:27 AM Jane_Curry: File "./tracepath.py", line 6, in <module>
9:53:28 AM Jane_Curry: from Products.ZenUtils.ZenScriptBase import ZenScriptBase
9:53:30 AM Jane_Curry: ImportError: No module named ZenUtils.ZenScriptBase
9:53:57 AM cluther: Jane_Curry: Try "source $ZENHOME/bin/zenfunctions.sh" then running it.
9:54:13 AM bbibeault: I don't see any ticket around that currently in Trac.
9:54:35 AM cluther: I've seen this on trunk too. Haven't looked into the reason for the difference yet. Most likely related to some Zope stuff moving from Products to lib/python/zope/Products.
10:00:33 AM Jane_Curry: I don't seem to have a zenfunctions.sh anywhere...
10:01:54 AM Jane_Curry: New question - maybe...
10:02:38 AM Jane_Curry: Does bbibeault's earlier comment about not editing locations etc, extend to not editing manually added interfaces?
10:03:10 AM Jane_Curry: I need to add a pseudo interface to bridge a black hole in my network topology
10:03:34 AM Jane_Curry: I can add an interface but I can't see where to set it's IP address etc
10:05:49 AM bbibeault: Jane, I just asked that in another chat, and am waiting for the reply.
10:06:50 AM Jane_Curry: cluther - I think that's just zenfunctions - not zenfunctions.sh - then tracepath.py works
10:07:08 AM Jane_Curry: Should I add a ticket for this?
10:07:10 AM cluther: oops, that's right.
10:07:26 AM cluther: Please. Lots of people rely on ZenScriptBase stuff to work and it needs to be fixed.
10:07:48 AM bbibeault: Chet, would you say a P1 ticket?
10:08:15 AM cluther: Yes.
10:08:48 AM cluther: It should just require a small update to the zenoss user's .bashrc file.
10:14:07 AM Jane_Curry: Ticket for ZenScriptBase needs $ZENHOME/bin/zenfunctions sourcing first - http://dev.zenoss.com/trac/ticket/6566
10:14:44 AM bbibeault: Thanks, Jane. Went ahead and bumped that to the highest priority for consideration this afternoon.
10:15:12 AM bbibeault: @Jane, from the earlier question, per Ian, click "Edit" - there should be a big form. This may be currently broken, though.
10:15:19 AM Jane_Curry: Gotcha - you just beatr me to it!
10:16:46 AM Jane_Curry: Tried the Edit button for my pseudo interface - no effect
10:17:54 AM bbibeault: Yeah, I noticed that failing for me, as well.
10:18:06 AM bbibeault: I also cannot edit the lo0 IP interface, I just never get the form, but I do for eth1.
10:18:14 AM bbibeault: Do you want to enter this one in?
10:18:19 AM bbibeault: If not, I can, no worries.
10:19:07 AM Jane_Curry: will do
10:19:10 AM bbibeault: Thanks.
10:31:15 AM Jane_Curry: Unable to edit interface ticket - http://dev.zenoss.com/trac/ticket/6567
10:31:27 AM bbibeault: Perfect, thanks Jane.
10:31:35 AM Jane_Curry: Even if the i/f has an IP address and you can see details..
10:32:01 AM Jane_Curry: trying to change anything (even the Monitored tick) fails to be Saved
10:32:15 AM bbibeault: Are both of those mentioned in the same ticket?
10:32:20 AM Jane_Curry: yup
10:32:34 AM bbibeault: (y)
10:48:49 AM Jane_Curry: Next thread...
10:49:16 AM Jane_Curry: You seem to have an awful lot more IP services and Windows services set to be monitored automatically
10:49:33 AM bbibeault: In your stack installation, or in the public-demo machine?
10:49:40 AM Jane_Curry: .. is this a conscious decision or just a current artefact?
10:49:49 AM Jane_Curry: .. this is in my stack install
10:49:52 AM bbibeault: AFAIK we have made no changes to these.
10:52:02 AM bbibeault: Yeah, just got confirmation on that, there shouldn't have been any changed. New ticket, please.
10:52:05 AM Jane_Curry: Well I have just brought up my standard Win test machine and it is automatically showing
10:52:18 AM Jane_Curry: 11 IP services and 97 Windows services after a model
10:52:34 AM Jane_Curry: Sure didn't add those to the OS tab in my 2.5.2 system
10:53:19 AM bbibeault: Thanks Jane, testing now.
11:15:22 AM wquesada: Hi Jane
11:15:57 AM wquesada: I just tested that the IP/Win Services against a 2.5.2 and your observations are right.
11:16:06 AM wquesada: Would you might enter a ticket for that ?
11:35:38 AM wquesada: Hi Jane, I added the following ticket for the issue you reported:
11:35:38 AM wquesada: Number of Automatically monitored WinServices is higher than in 2.5.2
11:35:38 AM wquesada: http://dev.zenoss.com/trac/ticket/6569
11:47:54 AM Jane_Curry: OK - thanks - just had to pop away to make some dinner...
11:48:14 AM bbibeault: Heheh, time dilation. About to enter the defect review here in Austin.
11:48:27 AM wquesada: dinner.. eh.. I'm just about to get lunch
11:49:00 AM Jane_Curry: -- that was "make" dinner - eating it is 90 minutes out yet!
11:49:24 AM bbibeault: For me it's a maximum of 5 minutes' microwave difference between make and eat.
11:49:41 AM wquesada:
11:50:38 AM Jane_Curry: Shame! Hearts & tails stew for anyone that can make Taplow by 21:30 (UK)
1:04:04 PM bbibeault: Just finished the defect review. And I doubt I could make it through Customs quick enough for dinner, but thanks for offering.
1:18:04 PM Jane_Curry: How do I see all events for a device?
1:18:41 PM Jane_Curry: The device page automatically seems to focus on the first component and the event link on the right shows you events
1:18:50 PM Jane_Curry: for the selected component..
1:18:52 PM bbibeault: Hrm, 1m.
1:19:03 PM Jane_Curry: .. how to easily see all events for a device?
1:19:39 PM Jane_Curry: Sorry - I've just come back too and started digging again..
1:20:00 PM Jane_Curry: Dinner time in 10 mins though - really eat it time - and drink it!
1:20:39 PM bbibeault: So when I go to say a Windows device, I start on the Overview page, and the bottom half seems to be a filtered event console for that device, not per component.
1:22:35 PM Jane_Curry: Sorry - I get it - need to click the little up-arrows at the bottom of the page to expand the Event Console view
1:22:45 PM bbibeault: Ahh, if was automatically opened for me.
1:22:47 PM bbibeault: Interesting.
1:23:18 PM Jane_Curry: I can also get a filtered device event view from the device issues portlet on the dashboard
1:24:35 PM Jane_Curry: Hmmm - I definitely need to click the double up-arrows at the bottom to see events
1:38:03 PM Jane_Curry: I'm not sure I like the initial focus when I drill into a device, being the first component of that device
1:38:23 PM Jane_Curry: I want to see an overview and the events for the device first
1:39:15 PM Jane_Curry: .. with the evnts showing, not hidden
1:40:32 PM Jane_Curry: New query..
1:41:11 PM Jane_Curry: From an event console, I have an event of class /Security/Auth (it's an SNMP auth failure)
1:42:02 PM Jane_Curry: Clicking /Security/Auth simply seems to take me to a full event console again..
1:42:12 PM bbibeault: Does it filter on /Security/Auth?
1:42:16 PM Jane_Curry: .. not to the definition of the event class
1:42:16 PM bbibeault: That is what I would expect?
1:42:22 PM bbibeault: Oh.
1:42:34 PM bbibeault: Your behavior I would not expect, but if you want to write that up as a ticket we can discuss it.
1:44:19 PM Jane_Curry: ok
1:48:47 PM Jane_Curry: Following event class link from event console doesn't work - ticket http://dev.zenoss.com/trac/ticket/6572
1:48:53 PM Jane_Curry: Dinner time!
