Error Monitoring Virtual-Machines after upgrading 2.4.5 to 2.5

Hi all,

 

System:

Zenoss-rpath-VMware-Appliance on ESX 3.5 (2Proc Intel Xeon 2,5GHz, 4GB RAM)

Monitoring 45 Routers, 47 Firewall, 30 (Full-Patched-)Windows 2003 R2-Server

ZenPacks.community.VMwareESX 2.21 (Wouter D'Haeseleer)

ZenPacks.sodonnell.VMReport 1.0 (Steven O'Donnell)

ZenPacks.vmware.VirtualMachines 1.2 (Michael C. Hoffman)

next to other ZenPacks

 

After upgrading from 2.4.5 to 2.5 all Zenoss-Daemons went well. Perf-Monitoring gets results and Graphs drawing well. RDD-files for the Virtual-Machines I monitor are still there. But when I click on the "Virtual Machines"-Tab the following error occur:

In Version 2.4.5 it works.

Have someone out there the same issue?

 

I checked the installation of the zenpacks with pre- and post-install-instructions.

I move the esx-server out off /devices/Server/esx and back and remodel them.

No special log-entry in the Daemons-log.

Reindexing Zope takes no effect

 

It seems to be a Zope-Database-Problem.

 

Any Help will be appreciated ...

    I'm having the same issue.  Tried the same processes you've mentioned still with no luck.

     

    Main difference for me is this happened on a new install; not doing any upgrade.

    When I install the VMare-VirtualMachines-Zenpack, it would be loaded with the following error:

    The installed Nagios Plugin check_esx2 works on Console and the rrd-files of the virtual Machines would be updated fine.

    I think, it is the same error. But I irritated about this thread and the corresponding tickets and patches :

    Must I change the init.py as described in ticket 5675 for the VMware-Zenpack or must I install patch 15466 as described in ticket 5679 or both or nothing, because the issue isn't fixed?

    Hi,

     

    additional to my post:

     

    Update to 2.5.1 have no result, the error is still there ...

    Mail to the developer of the ZenPack: "ZenPacks.vmware.VirtualMachines 1.2" (Michael C. Hoffman) have no effect/answer...

     

    Now I will try the way to open a ticket ...

     

    I think, if zenoss-team plan a Upgrade with so much changes in the programming, they have to include/inform the developer of the ZenPacks before release a new Version, provided the ZenPack-Developer are active and can reached. So release the new Version, after all ZenPack-Developer give their o.k. or give a warning for those ZenPacks, that not been tested with the new Version or the developer is not active anymore.

    I believe I fixed the installation error, could someone please test the attached ZenPack and see if it works for them?

    Perhaps a new optional field in the ZenPack creation then.  Since currently it has a minimum version requirment in the code, put a tested to build ### field in there  as well.  Then users will know that YMMV on the really old ZenPacks that have historically been working.

    thanks for the great work. Well done ...

     

    The "Virtual Machines"-Tab and all other Sites are working now. There is no installation error. But there are errors in the template, that would be installed with the ZenPack as described here

    first of all the path to the "check_esx2" in the command-line of the data-source "CPU_Utilization" is not correct and there is missing a "|" in the command-line:

     

    it depends on the linux-distribution ...

     

    generally after .../zenoss/... it must be changed from

     

    .../zenoss/ZenPacks.vmware.VirtualMachines/...

     

    to

     

    $ZENHOME/ZenPacks/ZenPacks.vmware.VirtualMachines-1.2.1-py2.4.egg/...

     

    I don't know if there is a way to make this code-line generally for all distributions and all following ZenPack-Versions.

     

    And the last sed-command must be changed from

     

    ...|sed -e 's/.*CPU\susage\sis\s/cpuUtil=/;s#%##;s/on.*(/cpuSec=/;s#s##;s/average.*$$//'

     

    to

     

    ...|sed -e 's/.*CPU\susage\sis\s/|cpuUtil=/;s#%##;s/on.*(/cpuSec=/;s#s##;s/average.*$$//'

     

    And last but not least the Names of the Virtual Machines may not contain "Spaces" because otherwise the check_esx2 produces on all polls the result:


    No aved state for Root-DC 2 CPU time yet - wait for next poll.

     

    without this tweaking there woudn't draw a CPU-Utilization-Performance-Graph.

    Hello Matt Ray,

     

    additional to my Post ...

     

    Install it over the old ZenPack stops all Performance-Graphs for the Virtual machines.

     

    Steps to solve this (!!!with loosing all rrd-Graphs for the Virtual Machines!!!):

     

    As User zenoss

     

    1. uninstall "ZenPacks.sodonnell.VMReport" (if installed, because based on VitualMachines-Zenpack)

    2. uninstall "ZenPacks.vmware.VirtualMachines"

    3. stop Zenoss with "zenoss stop"

    4. delete all Directories under $ZENHOME/perf/Devices/ESX-Server/virtualmachines/

         (repeat this Step for all ESX-Server under $ZENHOME/perf/Devices/, where "ESX-Server" must be replaced by the name of your Esx-Server)

    5. start Zope with "zeoctl start"

    6. reindex Zope-Database with:

         zendmd

         >>reindex()

         >>commit()

         CTRL+D

    7. start Zenoss with "zenoss start"

    8. install the two ZenPacks from Step 1 and 2

    9. stop zenoss as in Step 3., repeat Step 5 to 7

     

    After some Time all Performance-Graphs of the Virtual-Machines starts Graphing

     

    I know this is the sledgehammer-method!

    I don't know how to make Graph starting the drawing again. I try to skipped Step 4, but no existing Graph starts drawing again neither missing graphs would be new created.

     

    Hope this help someone.

    OK, I've fixed the hard-coded path as well, try this attached version of the ZenPack.
