SNMP Walk for APC Device Not Working

Hello All,

I'm currently evaluating different monitoring software for my company in hopes of finding a tool that integrates successfully with our IT infrastructure. I really do like Zenoss and currently I'm evaluating the Enterprise version (2.5.2). We are currently looking into monitoring power strips as well, and I seen that there are supported ZenPacks that can do this. We have an APC 7811 PDU, and were trying to grab SNMP information from it. I set it up with an IP and SNMPv1 access with the default community string still in tact. BUT, when I try to do an SNMP walk on the device with Zenoss, I am unable to. I know SNMP is enabled because I can grab SNMP information from our GFI LAN Network Scanner without any issues. But with Zenoss, I cannot grab any SNMP information. I know the PDU is configured correctly (as mentioned I did get results with GFI) with SNMPv1 and default community string... But I get nothing with Zenoss. It's only this device that I can't perform the SNMP walk. Any ideas? I am pretty new to this product. Thank you.

How are you doing an SNMPWalk from Zenoss? What specifically are you

doing? Is this in the GUI or command line?

Are you sure the security on the device allows SNMP connections from the

    Zenoss box IP address?

I've tried both actually.... Here's my syntax that I've tried in the command line:

    snmpwalk -v1 -cpublic IP_ADDRESS

    snmpwalk -v1 -cpublic IP_ADDRESS system

    snmpwalk -v1 -cpublic IP_ADDRESS 1.3

Those are the three cases that I've tried (IP_ADDRESS is the a IP of the APC). All with no response. Same goes for GUI.

Hmmm... Any firewall in the way perhaps?

I can choose to include an NMS or I can leave it as 0.0.0.0. I left it open to all, and I've also tried limiting it to just the Zenoss servers IP address. Same results either way.

What OS is Zenoss installed on?

So, checked with our firewall guy and he stated that there isn't any firewall on our internal network. I'm allowing the appropriate ports open on the Zenoss box as well. I even tried with the firewall disabled on the Zenoss box, and it did not work. You can look at the attached pic for settings when the firewall is turned on.

Weird... Can you ping the APC device? Telnet to port 161? When you issue

    snmpwalk -v1 -cpublic IP_ADDRESS

what do you get back? A timeout?

I'm not aware of any Zenpacks, but you should look at the Zenpack page

and consider creating your own Templates (and maybe Zenpacks). The

Templates aren't very difficult, the Zenpacks are a bit more so.

Ha... Well, good news. The issue has been resolved. The network guy got back to me and said that we use a different default gateway then the usual. So, after I changed that, I could start the SNMP walk. Odd thing though is that I could still communicate with it via ping, and I could grab SNMP info from GFI. I could also access APC's web interface to look at load metrics. So, sorry about all the trouble. I wish I would of known of this oddball gateway. Thanks for taking the time to help me out. One last question, to start monitoring this APC AP7811 device, is there any ZenPacks that would support his? Thanks again.

Re: SNMP Walk for APC Device Not Working

Just a small word of warning, ketteringce: compiling your own MIBs in Zenoss is, um, still not for the feint of heart. You'll probably need to set aside more time that you expected for it.

There are a few ZenPacks to support specific modules (7841, 7930, 9225)--so you might be lucky if you have one of those.

Maybe somelike (like me, I suppose) should make a ZenPack that installs the latest APCC MIBs for all of their products (like the ZenPacks for the Cisco & HP ProLiant MIBs). One of these days...
