[09:59a] malbon: lo all
[09:59a] mrayzenoss: right on time
[10:00a] mrchippy joined the chat room.
[10:01a] malbon: :)
[10:01a] mrayzenoss: mrchippy and I are here to answer your questions
[10:01a] mrayzenoss: especially mrchippy
[10:01a] rfort joined the chat room.
[10:02a] AdmGre: I only skimmed the e-mail, is there a primary topic today?
[10:02a] mrayzenoss: not really, we can talk about anything
[10:02a] mrayzenoss: like current events :)
[10:03a] rfort: how about rancid integration in enterprise 2.2?
[10:03a] malbon: isn't rancid already integrated with enterprise?
[10:03a] cluther joined the chat room.
[10:04a] rfort: well, it is in there
[10:04a] malbon: talking of which how can you change a new event into an existing event log update?
[10:04a] rfort: maybe a few quick questions, we were using 2.1 previously, but doing rancid manually
[10:04a] mrayzenoss: yeah, Rancid integration is part of Enterprise, if you have questions on that you should probably contact Client Services
[10:04a] hoangelos: what about not being able to login. I'm a little frutrated with how little info I can get wtih this. I have some log events that seem to be DB related: http://pastebin.com/d473eedce
[10:04a] adytum-bot: Title: pastebin - collaborative debugging tool (at pastebin.com)
[10:04a] rfort: yeah we have a scheduled meeting with one of our dev's and sales @ zenoss
[10:05a] rfort: 'cept, I think he is on vacation until Monday
[10:06a] paulh_ joined the chat room.
[10:07a] cgibbons joined the chat room.
[10:07a] mrchippy: sorry for the crickets, folks, i got distracted:)
[10:07a] __ian__ joined the chat room.
[10:08a] That1guy15: I keep getting the following error when trying to map an event to an eventclass does anyone know why?
[10:08a] That1guy15: 1 event is not class /Unknown.
[10:08a] malbon: mrchippy: excuses, excuses ;)
[10:09a] __ian__: That1guy15: Event class mappings are applicable only to the /Unknown class.
[10:11a] That1guy15: ah. is there a way to change the action or severity for this event?
[10:11a] rfort: rancidgroup, and rancidtype. do you have any suggestions what that might be regarding? I'm new to rancid and a bit confused :)
[10:11a] That1guy15: I dont want to change the whole class just the single event
[10:11a] mrchippy: malbon: you mean alter an existing event based on a new event?
[10:12a] mrayzenoss: hoangelos: What are you not able to login to?
[10:13a] hoangelos: mrayzenoss: the admin.  I use the default pass and then I get the lines you see from the events.log file
[10:13a] mrayzenoss: you're trying to log into the DB?
[10:13a] zenTouris1 joined the chat room.
[10:13a] That1guy15: I could care less about the event but its severity is error. I would like to change it to info or drop it all together
[10:14a] mrayzenoss: hoangelos: login is "admin" password "zenoss".  Does that not work?
[10:14a] mrayzenoss: hoangelos: is this a new or existing install?
[10:14a] hoangelos: it did not work for me no
[10:14a] hoangelos: myrayzenoss: a new install using first the RPMs from zenoss and then isntalled the RPMs via the yum
[10:15a] zenTouris1: Anyone seen this error ( WBEM_E_INVALID_CLASS ) when enabling zenoss.wmi.SoftwareMap?
[10:16a] cluther: That1guy15: You'd need to use an event class transform instead of a mapping.
[10:16a] cluther: That1guy15: Go to the event class that this event is being put in and choose More -> Transform from the menu.
[10:16a] cluther: That1guy15: Stick something like the following in the transform..
[10:17a] mrayzenoss: hoangelos: is mysql running?  I assume you followed the install guide instructions?  Maybe verify each step?
[10:17a] cluther: That1guy15: if "triggerText" in evt.summary: evt._action = "drop"
[10:18a] cluther: That1guy15: Now any events going into this event class that have "triggerText" in their summary will be dropped.
[10:18a] hoangelos: I used the install PDF to install it and then later tried http://www.zenoss.com/community/docs/install-guides/install-with-zenoss-stack-rpm/?searchterm=RPM too
[10:18a] adytum-bot: Title: Install with zenoss-stack RPM - Commercial Open Source Application, Systems and Network Monitoring - Zenoss (at www.zenoss.com)
[10:18a] That1guy15: I assume Text is were i would put the event right/
[10:19a] mrayzenoss: what version did you install?  what's the name of the RPM?
[10:19a] cluther: That1guy15: triggerText
[10:19a] hoangelos: using CentOS 5.2 and the RPM that's installed is zenoss-2.2.4-75.el5
[10:20a] mrayzenoss: hoangelos: Figured it out.  The zenoss-stack RPM was removed, but somehow you found the install instructions for it
[10:20a] That1guy15: gotcha :)
[10:20a] mrayzenoss: You have the native RPM (which is good)
[10:21a] mrayzenoss: hoangelos: Get this PDF
[10:21a] hoangelos: that's what I used at first
[10:21a] mrayzenoss: hoangelos: follow the Chapter 4 instructions
[10:22a] mrayzenoss: hoangelos: the ones you referred to were to the wrong ones for your RPM
[10:22a] hoangelos: I'm running CentOS 5 so wouldn't it be chapter 5?
[10:22a] mrayzenoss: hoangelos: yes, sorry
[10:22a] That1guy15: cluther: is there a limit on characters?
[10:22a] hoangelos: I first did this and then went to the one I sent you after the first one didn't work either
[10:22a] hoangelos: I can uninstall and try to follow it another time, but I don't see how it will happen differently
[10:22a] cluther: That1guy15: No.
[10:23a] That1guy15: Cool thanks for the info.
[10:23a] That1guy15: Everyone have a good weekend
[10:23a] That1guy15 left the chat room. ("ChatZilla 0.9.83 [Firefox 3.0.3/2008092417]")
[10:23a] mrayzenoss: hoangelos: since this is a new install, let's try running the uninstall instructions (chap 11) and then starting over
[10:24a] mrayzenoss: hoangelos: restart with a clean slate
[10:24a] hoangelos: mrayzenoss: k and don't use the yum repo I assume
[10:25a] mrayzenoss: correct, we'll follow the Chap 5 instructions verbatim and see if there are any issues
[10:25a] cjackel: Question: When setting smtp properties, it appears to autocomplete 'admin' if you try to set it to blank for authentication. What config file has the true current state?
[10:26a] cjackel: My mail server saw the attempts to connect, but zenoss kept resetting the connection.
[10:26a] malbon: mrchippy: an existing event, sorry I got meetingified
[10:26a] cluther: cjackel: This is your browser auto-completing the field.
[10:26a] mrchippy: malbon: no probs.  i know the feeling
[10:27a] cjackel: cluther: after hitting save?
[10:27a] cjackel: cluther: I delete the field, hit save, it comes back with admin
[10:27a] cluther: cjackel: Right.. go into your browser's autocomplete section and clear out the entry for your Zenoss URL.
[10:29a] cjackel: cluther: Ah. That makes some sense. Is there a config file with the current properties?
[10:29a] cluther: cjackel: No.. it is stored in the Zope database.
[10:29a] cjackel: okay
[10:30a] garnica joined the chat room.
[10:30a] cluther: cjackel: However, you can forcefully set it outside the browser..
[10:30a] bnafziger__ left the chat room. (Remote closed the connection)
[10:31a] cluther: cjackel: Run "zendmd" as the zenoss user and then the following commands..
[10:31a] rfort: cluther: question when you got a second, I'm curious about zenoss+rancid integration. if you update say, a username or password, does it update the rancid conf? or am I not understanding it correctly ?
[10:31a] bnafziger__ joined the chat room.
[10:31a] malbon: cluther & mrchippy: is there any move to optimize the zeodb into another more efficient or multiaccess form? our zeodb really slows down from time to time.
[10:31a] cluther: cjackel: dmd.smtpUser = ''
[10:31a] cluther: cjackel: dmd.smtpPass = ''
[10:31a] cluther: cjackel: commit()
[10:31a] cgibbons: zenTouris1: yeah I can help you with that WBEM error.
[10:31a] cluther: rfort: We don't build your .cloginrc, only your routers.db
[10:32a] cluther: rfort: So the answer would be no.
[10:32a] cjackel: cluther: Thanks. I may have had other mail issues, but I could be sure exactly what it was using for auth.
[10:32a] mrchippy: malbon:  not that i know of at this time.  when are you seeing these slowdowns?
[10:32a] cjackel: cluther: *couldn't
[10:32a] cgibbons: short answer is it means your server (probably a windows 2003 standard edition?) doesn't have the WMI Installer extensions installed so Zenoss can't gather installed software information via WMI.
[10:32a] malbon: mrchippy: it's sporadic, especially when we restart daemons, or during modelling
[10:32a] cgibbons: if you want that data, you'll need to install that (easy), or you can disable the SoftwareMap collector plugin for the device to get it to stop trying.
[10:33a] hoangelos: mrayzenoss: one problem I see so far si that the Zenos core zenpacks on the website doesn't have a version that matches the version I ahve
[10:33a] zenTouris1: cgibbons:  i disabled it for now, but it would be nice to get that data.  is it an install from MS's site?
[10:33a] mrchippy: malbon: are you pretty sure it's the zeodb access that's the culprit?
[10:33a] hoangelos: myrayzenoss: I have 2.2.4 and they only seem to have 2.2.3
[10:33a] mrayzenoss: hoangelos: don't worry about ZenPacks just yet
[10:33a] hoangelos: k
[10:33a] hoangelos: so skip those install instructions
[10:33a] mrayzenoss: yeah
[10:33a] malbon: mrchippy: either that or zenhub, but they both have high cpu
[10:34a] cgibbons: from control panel. you'll need your install media / service pack media handy. go to control panel, add / remove programs, then the Windows Components on the left side. then go down until you see WMI Installer Provider and click that.
[10:34a] cgibbons: for some reason win2003 standard doesn't install that by default, but XP and windows 2003 enterprise does
[10:34a] rfort: cluther: ah ok, I understand now what it does/doesn't do. thanks
[10:34a] zenTouris1: sounds easy enough.  Thanks for the tip cgibbons
[10:34a] malbon: mrchippy: I initially thought it was hrSWInstalled updating or something like that, but that is only a hunch
[10:35a] burlyscudd joined the chat room.
[10:35a] hoangelos: mrayzenoss: same error "The entered password or username is incorrect"
[10:37a] mrayzenoss: Is your mysql instance running?
[10:38a] hoangelos: mrayzenoss: I followed the instructions for ch. 5 verbatim except for skipping the steps to install the zenpacks
[10:38a] mrchippy: malbon: well, i guess the quick answer is no we're not looking at that at the moment. however, if we could reproduce a consistent issue... of course, the hard problems are never consistently reproduceable ;(
[10:39a] malbon: mrchippy: yes indeed, I've not got a magic formula for reproducing it yet.
[10:39a] mrayzenoss: hoangelos: When you started zenoss, did all the services start up correctly?
[10:40a] hoangelos: I'll paste in the first startup
[10:46a] zenTouris1 left the chat room.

[10:48a] adytum-bot: Title: pastebin - collaborative debugging tool (at pastebin.com)
[10:51a] malbon: when creating a new hardware device (in this case an HP Fan) in the hardware page, I modify the TemperatureSensor model type and call it HPTemperatureSensor, how do I get my class to recognise an RRD Template called HPTemperatureSensor, or is it a static 1-to-1 mapping?
[10:51a] mrhinkle joined the chat room.
[10:52a] dean joined the chat room.
[10:52a] zenTouris1 joined the chat room.
[10:52a] dean: Hi all.
[10:53a] garnica: you can map this HPTemperatureSensor to a complete class
[10:54a] garnica: Navigate to the class you want to apply your template
[10:54a] garnica: in the templates tab select "Bind Templates...."
[10:54a] malbon: garnica: yes, actually I want it to happen automatically as part of the modeling process.
[10:56a] garnica: then... when you add some device, in the "Device Class Path" select the class to wich you binded your HPTemperatureSensor template
[10:56a] mrayzenoss: hoangelos: Nothing looks weird in that.  This is a stumper
[10:56a] mrchippy: malbon:  the templates in the z property zDeviceTemplates will be automatically bound
[10:56a] hoangelos: yeah to me too
[10:57a] malbon: mrchippy: yeah, I've probably not explained it properly.
[10:57a] hoangelos: mrayzenoss: the only thing I see is when I bump up the logging to the events log to debug I see what seem to be transaction problems
[10:57a] malbon: I'll re-submit it next time around if I've not worked it out by then.
[10:58a] mrayzenoss: hoangelos: Perhaps post this on the forums with your links and mention the steps you followed... maybe another CentOS user might have an idea
[11:01a] cluther: malbon: regarding the template binding. You're right in assuming that component templates get bound based on the class name.
[11:02a] cluther: malbon: To be precise, the DeviceComponent base class has a method called getRRDTemplateByName that actually performs the binding. Your object can override that method if you wish to use a different template name for your class.
[11:02a] cluther: malbon: Assuming your class is derived from DeviceComponent.. which it absolutely should be.
[11:04a] zenTouris1 left the chat room.
[11:04a] dean left the chat room. ("Leaving")
[11:04a] malbon: cluther: cool, that's what I thought.
[11:04a] cluther: malbon: Oops.. bad information. It is the getRRDTemplateName method of the RRDView base class.
[11:04a] malbon: cluther: I inherited TemperatureSensor in my class but it doesn't seem to work according to plan.
[11:05a] cluther: malbon: You're able to model the sensors properly, but zenperfsnmp isn't making the OID requests in your template?
[11:06a] dorferiferon left the chat room. ("Leaving.")
[11:06a] malbon: cluther: nope, I model fine, but the host picks the TemperatureSensor Template rather than HPTemperatureSensor
[11:07a] cluther: malbon: Do you have meta_type defined as a property of the HPTemperatureSensor class?
[11:07a] malbon: cluther: it's probably something very simple that I am not doing right
[11:07a] cluther: malbon: Set meta_type = "HPTemperatureSensor" in your HPTemperatureSensor class and it'll likely work
[11:08a] malbon: cluther: http://www.pastebin.ca/1247982
[11:08a] adytum-bot: Title: general pastebin - Mine - post number 1247982 (at www.pastebin.ca)
[11:08a] malbon: cluther: nope, I didn't realise about meta_type, but that'd certainly make sense.
[11:09a] hoangelos: mrayzenoss: stupid question about I didn'ti configure snmp this is a virgin system.  That wouldn't stop things would it?
[11:09a] mrayzenoss: no
[11:09a] hoangelos: didn't think so
[11:10a] garnica left the chat room. (Read error: 145 (Connection timed out))
[11:10a] mrayzenoss: hoangelos: are you using "admin" or "Admin"?
[11:10a] hoangelos: all lowercase
[11:10a] mrayzenoss: dang
[11:10a] mrayzenoss: "admin" and "zenoss"
[11:10a] hoangelos: for both
[11:10a] mrchippy left the chat room.
[11:12a] hoangelos: I think I found something
[11:12a] hoangelos: in zenhub there's a CRITICAL notic that it can't find host and ignorning netowrk topology
[11:12a] hoangelos: and then a warning that removing listener
[11:13a] mrayzenoss: hmmm... I wonder if it's some combination of localhost/hostname weirdness
[11:14a] mrayzenoss: what URL are you using?
[11:15a] garnica joined the chat room.
[11:15a] hoangelos: noc.numbersusa.com, which is the name of the machine
[11:16a] mrayzenoss: and /etc/hosts has that entry?
[11:16a] hoangelos: yeah it's associated with an internal IP, but it's also in the DNS
[11:16a] hoangelos: I shoudl say a non-loopback IP it's associated with
[11:17a] CamargoBP_ left the chat room.
[11:20a] zenChild joined the chat room.
[11:20a] hoangelos: actually I do see collection of stats seem to be taking place by looking at the log
[11:21a] mrayzenoss: hoangelos: I'm a bit stumped, put that log message in a post on the forums and I'll dig around a bit on it
[11:22a] mrayzenoss: I've got to get going in a minute, I just want to thank everyone for showing up. We'll have another session in 2 weeks (Nov. 20). We expect 2.3 to be out before then.
[11:23a] malbon: Thanks Zenoss folks.
